Regina Chukwu alleges ‘sex-for-roles’ culture in English Nollywood

Nollywood actress Regina Chukwu has alleged that the English-language segment of Nigeria’s film industry was dominated by a “sex-for-roles” culture, saying the experience influenced her decision to build her career in the Yoruba movie industry.

Speaking in an interview on Oyinmomo TV, Chukwu claimed that aspiring actresses seeking opportunities in the English-speaking sector often faced demands for sexual favours before securing acting roles.

The actress said her repeated attempts to break into the English-language film industry through auditions in Surulere, Lagos, were unsuccessful because of what she described as an unwelcoming environment.

According to her, the Yoruba movie industry was more accommodating and offered her a better opportunity to develop her acting career, despite her Igbo background.

Chukwu alleged that some individuals in the English-language sector used fake movie scripts to lure aspiring actresses into sexual relationships, adding that such practices discouraged her from pursuing a career in that segment of the industry.

She also said focusing on Yoruba films had limited her recognition in parts of eastern Nigeria, explaining that while she is widely known across Lagos and other South-West states, many people in her home state are unfamiliar with her acting career.

The actress’ claims have generated fresh conversations on allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse of power within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
