Imprisoned American R&B singer Robert Sylvester Kelly, popularly known as R. Kelly, has formally applied to U.S. President Donald Trump for clemency to reduce his 30-year prison sentence.

The 59-year-old singer was sentenced in June 2022 after a U.S. District Court found him guilty of multiple sexual offences, including sex trafficking.

The singer is seeking a commutation of his sentence rather than a full presidential pardon.

The request follows sustained lobbying by his lawyer, Beau Brindley, who has publicly appealed to President Trump to grant clemency for more than a year.

Kelly was also convicted in Chicago in 2022 on child pornography charges and offences relating to sexual abuse involving underage girls.

He is currently serving his prison sentence following the convictions.
