Police, NFIU Strengthen Alliance Against Money Laundering, Terrorism financing

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has pledged deeper collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to tackle money laundering, terrorism financing, and other financial crimes.

Disu made the commitment while receiving NFIU Director and Chief Executive Officer, Hafsat Bakari, during a courtesy visit to Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to a statement by Force PRO, CSP Ani Iniedu, the meeting focused on enhancing operational synergy, improving intelligence sharing, and institutionalising strategic cooperation between the two agencies.

Bakari, who led a high-level delegation, described the partnership as vital to Nigeria’s national security. She noted that the upcoming 2027 Mutual Evaluation would assess how effectively the police use NFIU intelligence to dismantle criminal networks and secure convictions.

“The evaluation will critically assess how the Police utilise NFIU financial intelligence to counter money laundering and terrorism financing,” Bakari said.

She commended the IGP for approving a joint stock-taking exercise and urged wider awareness programmes across police commands nationwide.

Responding, Disu emphasised the importance of sustained training and access to actionable intelligence.

He highlighted the role of the Force’s specialised Anti-Money Laundering Unit in investigating complex financial crimes and called for modern tools to boost conviction rates.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to working with the NFIU and other strategic partners to safeguard national security and strengthen public confidence in law enforcement.
