The Delta state Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation against illegal roadblocks and unauthorised revenue collection points on highways across the state.
The exercise, which began Friday, followed the directive of the federal government to eliminate extortion, harassment of motorists and other criminal activities on Nigerian roads.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Bright Edafe, said the operation targeted identified locations where illegal tolling activities and roadblocks had become a source of concern to commuters and motorists.
He stated that nine suspects were arrested during the initial phase of the operation at strategic locations, including the Head Bridge axis, the boundary area between Delta and Anambra states, and the Benin–Asaba Expressway around Agbor.
SP Edafe added that the suspects remain in police custody and would be charged to court after the completion of investigations.
The command assured residents and road users that the enforcement would be sustained across the state, adding that similar operations would be extended to other areas of Delta to ensure free movement and protect motorists from illegal levies and intimidation.
The Police command urged members of the public to support the initiative by reporting cases of illegal roadblocks, extortion and other activities capable of disrupting security and public order on the highways.
