The National Population Commission (NPC) has introduced a new digital platform that allows Nigerians to register births and deaths online, eliminating the need for physical visits in many cases.

NPC Chairman, Dr Aminu Yusuf, announced the commencement of the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system and the VitalReg platform during a press briefing in Abuja.

According to Yusuf, the platform became fully operational across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory on July 1, 2026.

He explained that the initiative would modernise civil registration by offering:

24-hour online access to servicesDigital certificate issuance where applicableImproved data validation and security

Reduced paperwork and waiting timeYusuf described the reform as “one of the most transformative in Nigeria’s civil registration history,” stressing its role in strengthening data integrity and ensuring every birth and death is documented.

Nigeria records an estimated five million births annually, yet millions remain unregistered. Current coverage stands at 57% for births and below 20% for deaths, leaving many Nigerians without legal identity and limiting reliable data for national planning.

To close these gaps, the NPC has:

Established 4,011 registration centres across 774 local government areasPlanned expansion to 8,000 centres

Partnered with ALGON, NIMC, UNICEF, and Barnksforte Technologies to decentralise servicesWhile some specialised services such as record modifications and certificate reissuance will attract reviewed fees, Yusuf assured that birth registration and notification remain highly subsidised.

He urged parents and stakeholders to participate actively, noting that universal registration is essential for legal identity, credible demographic data, and effective governance.
