Nigeria–US shipping: Global lines applaud lifting of 12-year restriction

International shipping companies have hailed the decision of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) to lift the 12-year Condition of Entry (COE) imposed on vessels originating from Nigerian ports and destined for the United States.

The restriction, introduced in 2014, required heightened security checks on vessels that had called at Nigerian ports, but its removal is now seen as a major boost for Nigeria’s maritime trade.

Maersk, one of the world’s largest shipping firms, described the move as a turning point for Nigeria’s global shipping profile.

Srijesh Subramanian, Terminal Planning Lead – WAF, said: “This is a welcome move which will enable better trade both for importers and exporters. Shipping companies will be a little more bold in their expansion plans for the future. With the US removal of the COE, it is saying that Nigeria looks more like a safer environment than previously perceived.”

Ocean Network Express (ONE) also congratulated Nigeria, noting the role of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in strengthening port security.

Stefan Pedersen, ONE’s Nigeria Director, remarked: “Congratulations to Nigeria on the lifting of the Condition of Entry. It shows the work that NIMASA has been doing all these years has actually paid off. While ONE does not have direct sailings to the US, I’m certain this will make trade easier for colleagues in the industry.”

Pacific International Lines (PIL) emphasized the reputational benefits of the development. Managing Director Ugo Opiah explained: “It’s a very good one in terms of image. The US is seen as a global benchmark, so qualifying under its standards signals Nigeria has upped its game in maritime security.”
