Niger: NUJ seeks independent, transparent investigation into 37 miners’ death

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has demanded a full, independent and transparent investigation into the reported death of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger dtate.

The union said the reported deaths were of grave public concern, and called on the authorities to without fear or favour, establish what exactly happened to the detainees and whether any act of negligence, abuse, misconduct or breach of procedure contributed to their deaths.

“When citizens are taken into government custody, the state assumes a responsibility for their safety and humane treatment. Any death in custody therefore demands clear answers, credible investigation and accountability where wrongdoing is established,” a statement on Saturday, by National President of the NUJ,” Alhassan Abdullahi said.

The Union commiserated with the families, relatives and communities of the deceased and urged them and the wider public to remain calm while the authorities establish the facts surrounding the incident.

It also welcomed the decision of the Federal, and Niger State governments to investigate the incident, the reported suspension of the Niger State NSCDC Commandant pending investigation, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for a full and transparent probe.

The union however, noted that the credibility of the process will depend on its independence, impartiality, transparency and freedom from interference.

It called both the federal, and Niger State governments, and the NSCDC and other relevant stakeholders, to ensure expeditious conclusion of the investigation, and the findings made public.
