NAFDAC Begins Nationwide Crackdown On Sachet Alcohol, Small Pet Bottles

• NAFDAC has launched coordinated nationwide enforcement to remove banned sachet alcohol and alcoholic drinks packaged in PET bottles below 200ml from circulation.

• The agency warned that anyone found producing, distributing or selling the prohibited products risks seizure, prosecution and other regulatory sanctions.

• The exercise is aimed at curbing underage drinking, harmful alcohol consumption and substance abuse across Nigeria.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has commenced a nationwide enforcement campaign against alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles below 200 millilitres, intensifying efforts to implement the Federal Government’s prohibition of the products.

The agency said the operation is being carried out simultaneously across the six geopolitical zones to enforce the ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale and use of alcoholic drinks packaged in sachets and small PET bottles.

According to NAFDAC, the enforcement drive follows the shutdown of manufacturing facilities that failed to comply with the government’s directive and forms part of broader efforts to safeguard public health.

In a statement, the agency said its enforcement teams have been deployed to markets, motor parks, retail outlets, bars and other distribution channels nationwide to identify, confiscate and remove the prohibited products from circulation.

NAFDAC urged manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, transporters and other stakeholders still in possession of the affected products to surrender their remaining stock without delay.

The agency warned that continued production, distribution or sale of the banned alcoholic beverages constitutes a breach of existing regulations and could attract product seizure, regulatory sanctions and prosecution.

Explaining the rationale behind the enforcement, NAFDAC said the measure is designed to reduce underage drinking, discourage harmful alcohol consumption and tackle the growing challenge of substance abuse, particularly among children and young people.

It also appealed to members of the public to support the exercise by refraining from purchasing the banned products and reporting anyone involved in their production, distribution or sale to the nearest NAFDAC office or through its designated toll-free line.
