Kogi: ISPON to clamp down on violations of safety regulations by heavy-duty trucks

The Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), Kogi State chapter, has raised alarm over persistent violations of safety regulations by heavy-duty truck operators along the Barracks Road corridor leading to GYB junction, warning that strict enforcement measures will commence from August 31.

Chairman of the institute in the state, Elder Friday Makama, who also serves as the Chief Consultant on Kogi State Safety Standard Regulations and Compliance, disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing held in Lokoja.

He stated that the institute, in its capacity as the state consultant on safety standards, is mandated to ensure that companies, industries, government institutions and non-governmental organisations adhere strictly to established safety regulations across the state.

According to him, the body has continued to carry out routine inspections of companies, industries and government infrastructure to safeguard public assets and ensure the protection of lives and property.

Makama, however, expressed concern over what he described as blatant disregard for safety compliance by trailers and heavy duty truck operators, who have continued to ply the Barracks Road despite its unsuitability for such vehicles.

“Our inspection has revealed serious violations of safety standards on the Barracks Road axis. Heavy trucks and trailers are illegally using the route instead of the House of Assembly Road, which is specifically designed to accommodate such heavy-duty vehicles,” he said.

He noted that the continued use of the road by heavy-duty trucks has led to rapid deterioration and structural damage, posing a significant risk to public safety and infrastructure.

Describing the situation as unacceptable, the ISPON chairman announced that the institute would begin full enforcement of safety regulations to curb the menace.

“As from August 31, any heavy-duty truck or trailer found plying the Barracks Road will be arrested. All operators are hereby advised to strictly use the House of Assembly Road linking Crusher and GYB Junction, which is designated for such vehicles,” Makama warned.

He called on transport unions, haulage companies and relevant stakeholders to sensitise their members and ensure full compliance with the directive, stressing that the enforcement action is in the interest of public safety and infrastructure preservation.

Makama reiterated the institute’s commitment to upholding safety standards across Kogi State, urging all road users and organisations to cooperate with regulatory authorities to prevent avoidable damage and ensure sustainable development.
