According to him, Messi is well placed to win a record-extending ninth Ballon d’Or if Argentina defeat Spain in the World Cup final, while Yamal would become the favourite should Spain lift the trophy.
“The World Cup serves as the pivotal factor for the Ballon d’Or. Just as Harry Kane may have earned it, Lamine Yamal could also achieve this. He has had an outstanding season despite facing injuries and has been crucial for Barcelona,” Mendieta said.

He added that Yamal has also remained influential for the Spanish national team and mentioned Mikel Oyarzabal as another player deserving recognition.
“If Spain triumphs, we should consider their roster for potential candidates. Mikel Oyarzabal is another exceptional player that has gained recognition. If Argentina prevails, Messi will undoubtedly win it,” he added.
Messi has scored eight goals and provided four assists for Argentina at the ongoing World Cup in North America, while Yamal has registered one goal in seven appearances for Spain.
