Laws that centralize police authorization in Nigeria have failed – Deputy Speaker Kalu

Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, says obsolete laws cebtralised the authorization of police in Nigeria have failed.

Kalu made this remark on Thursday during Arise Television’s Town Hall on State Police as he threw his weight on the creation of state police in the country.

He said for every government, the law places the protection of lives and property at the top of its priorities.

“Proximity is key in policing. If the authorisation point is in Abuja and incidents are happening far from Abuja, by the time authorisation comes it may be too late.

“As a parliament, we also recognise that having a police force that is close to the people and familiar with the local terrain and environment will be more effective.”
