Lagos: Police detain Chinese national over alleged sexual assault of employee

The Lagos State Police Command has detained a Chinese national, identified as Bai Quang, over allegations of sexual assault and repeated unwanted sexual advances toward a Nigerian employee.

The suspect was reportedly petitioned by his employee, Mr Charles Nwafor, who alleged that the Chinese national subjected him to persistent sexual advances and attempted to force him into unwanted sexual acts.

According to a police source, the alleged incidents began with repeated advances which Nwafor reportedly rejected.

The source said the situation allegedly escalated when the suspect was accused of pulling down the complainant’s trousers and touching his private parts without his consent.

It was further alleged that the suspect later invited Nwafor to a hotel on the pretext of discussing a business matter, but allegedly attempted to compel him to engage in sexual activities.

The alleged attempt was reportedly unsuccessful, following which the complainant approached the police and formally reported the matter.

The development prompted the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Tijani, to direct the transfer of the case from the Alausa Police Station to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for comprehensive investigation.

The police source said the complainant also alleged that the suspect threatened him and subsequently terminated his employment after he refused to submit to the alleged advances.

The case is currently being handled by the Diplomatic/Foreign Nationals Section of the SCID, under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the department, Mr Dayo Akinbisehin.

The source said the relevant authorities were taking steps to notify the Chinese Embassy of the suspect’s detention, in accordance with procedures applicable to cases involving foreign nationals.

He added that investigators were examining the allegations and gathering evidence to establish what transpired and determine the appropriate legal action.

“The suspect is in safe custody while investigation is ongoing,” the source said.

The Lagos State Police Command recently decentralised the SCID’s investigative operations into specialised units and sections as part of efforts to strengthen its response to emerging and specialised crimes.

Under the new structure, the Diplomatic/Foreign Nationals Crimes Section handles criminal complaints involving non-Nigerians in Lagos, with the aim of improving coordination between the police and relevant diplomatic missions.

 The police have yet to disclose the outcome of the investigation or whether formal charges have been filed against the suspect.
