Jamey Carney Murder Suspect Identified: 'He Could Disappear,' Source Warns After Reported Escape to Turkey

The main suspect in the murder of Jamey Carney, a US-born resident of Ireland, fled to Turkey shortly before her body was found by her daughter.

The main suspect in the killing of US-born Jamey Carney fled Ireland just hours after the alleged murder and before her body was discovered, according to Irish media reports. The 28-year-old Middle Eastern asylum seeker boarded a flight from Dublin Airport to Istanbul, Turkey, late on Tuesday morning, several hours before Carney’s 13-year-old daughter found her mother’s body at their rented home in Killarney, County Kerry, according to The Irish Star and the Irish Mirror.

The reported departure is a significant setback for investigators, who had initially believed the suspect had left Killarney and was attempting to flee the country but hoped he was still in Ireland.

Carney, 43, who moved to Ireland from Westchester County, New York, in 2021, was found dead on Tuesday afternoon after suffering multiple head injuries. Irish police, known as the Gardaí, have since upgraded the case to a murder investigation.

The Gardaí have not publicly identified the man they are seeking but previously told the Irish Independent he is a 28-year-old migrant from the Middle East who applied for asylum after arriving in Ireland in 2024.

According to the Irish Sun, Garda sources said Carney had known the man for around a year and a half after meeting him at a pro-Palestine protest. The newspaper reported that she had shared images and videos from pro-Palestine demonstrations on social media.

“The feeling is that she may have met this individual at an anti-war demonstration and kept in contact over the last number of months,” a police source told the Irish Sun.

According to the Irish Mirror, investigators believe the suspect travelled by bus from Killarney to Dublin at about 3.30am on Tuesday before boarding a flight to Istanbul at around 11am. The alarm was not raised until about 1.20pm, when Carney’s daughter contacted a family friend after becoming concerned for her mother’s welfare.

The friend then contacted another man, who alerted the Gardaí. Officers attended the property, where Carney was pronounced dead. Irish media reported that Carney’s body had been covered with a duvet and that she had sustained serious head injuries during what investigators believe was a prolonged attack.

The suspect is reported to have been living in an International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) centre in Killarney while seeking asylum since mid-2024. Irish media reported that he was known to Carney and frequently stayed at her home.

According to the reports, investigators are concerned the man could use Turkey as a transit point before travelling to his home country. While Turkey has an extradition treaty with Ireland, extradition would require formal criminal charges to be brought, and authorities cannot seek extradition solely for questioning, the reports said.

“It could just disappear,” one source told the Irish Mirror, referring to the possibility that the suspect could evade detection if travelling under false identification.

In a statement on Wednesday, An Garda Síochána confirmed that the investigation had been upgraded to a murder inquiry. “An Garda Síochána are continuing to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body of a female at a domestic residence in Killarney on Tuesday 7th July 2026,” a spokesperson said. “The results of this post-mortem examination are not being released for operational reasons.”

The force said a Senior Investigating Officer had been appointed to lead the investigation and that an incident room had been established at Killarney Garda Station.

Police have appealed for anyone who was in the Muckross Road area of Killarney between 11pm on 6 July and 5am on 7 July, including anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward.

Carney worked for a healthcare consulting company and was active in local sports, heritage organisations and pro-Palestine campaign groups in Ireland. Her family is expected to travel from the United States.

Local councillor Martin Grady, a personal friend of Carney, described her death as “an appalling tragedy”. “She was a loving, caring mother and was always happy and smiling,” he said.
