‘I’ve Been Asked In So Many Interviews, Will You Guarantee Steady Electricity? I Said No’ -Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, has explained why he believes it would be unrealistic to promise Nigerians immediate, uninterrupted electricity if elected president, saying reforms in the power sector require time to produce results.

Speaking in a video posted on Advocacy for Good Governance Obi said he has been asked repeatedly whether he could guarantee steady electricity. He responded that such a promise would not be realistic because building power generation and transmission infrastructure takes several years. However, he said his administration would aim to significantly increase electricity generation, transmission, and distribution before leaving office.

According to him, “I’ve been asked in so many interviews, ‘Will you guarantee steady electricity?’ I said no, it’s not possible because I know it takes about 3 years to build a power generation company if I’m going to support one. It takes time to rebuild infrastructure for transmission and this, but I said by the time I leave, I guarantee that we’ll be generating, transmitting, and distributing not less than 10,000.”

Obi maintained that while constant electricity cannot be achieved overnight, his focus would be on laying the infrastructure needed to substantially improve power supply and ensure measurable progress in the electricity sector during his tenure…....
