“It Was a Mistake”: Ukraine Tells Iran After Ship Strike, Pushes To Avoid War

Tehran earlier hinted of planned retaliatory strike pn Ukraine’s seaport after an attack on an Iranian commercial vessel, Kyiv says it was accidental and wanted to prevent further escalation.

Ukraine has moved to ease tensions with Iran after Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reportedly spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, assuring Tehran that an attack on an Iranian commercial vessel was accidental and that Kyiv wanted to prevent further escalation.

The diplomatic engagement followed Iran’s allegation that Ukraine was responsible for attacking one of its commercial vessels in the Caspian Sea.

In a statement posted on X, Sybiha confirmed the call, saying: “I called Iran’s Foreign Minister Araghchi for a frank conversation. Diplomacy is about direct conversation, even when it’s difficult. I stressed that our goal is to avoid unnecessary escalation.”

The Ukrainian foreign minister reiterated that Kyiv’s military operations were directed solely at defending the country against Russia.

He stated: “I reiterated that all of Ukraine’s actions are aimed solely at defending our country from Russian aggression and never intended to target civilian vessels or people.”

Sybiha added that the same position applied to Iran’s claims regarding the recent incident involving its vessel.

He said: “This is also true with regard to Iran’s statements about their national who died and a civilian vessel that was targeted in a recent incident. Our goal is to counter Russian aggression, which is the root cause of all incidents, and it is Russia who bears full responsibility for all provocations and casualties.”

According to Sybiha, he also urged Tehran to avoid actions that could worsen the situation while calling for an end to its support for Russia.

The Ukrainian foreign minister added: “Our position remains unchanged: Europe and the Middle East deserve stability, security, and peace.”

His remarks came after Araghchi disclosed that he had received assurances from Kyiv over the incident.

In a separate statement posted on X on Tuesday, the Iranian foreign minister wrote: “Was assured by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha that the attack on an Iranian ship was unintentional and Ukraine seeks no escalation.”

Araghchi, however, stressed that Tehran would not tolerate attacks on its citizens or national interests, adding that compensation would be expected for the damage caused.

He said: “Iran does not seek escalation either, but made clear any attack on our citizens or interests is unacceptable. There must be restitution for losses.”

The latest exchange followed accusations by Tehran that Ukraine was responsible for attacking an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, triggering an explosion that reportedly killed one sailor and injured another

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs subsequently summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran to formally protest what it described as a “hostile and criminal” attack on the vessel.

The ministry said the incident occurred on Saturday and claimed the attack had already been acknowledged by the Ukrainian leadership.

The ministry further alleged that the incident reflected Kyiv’s continued “irrational and hostile approach” towards Iran and warned that the Islamic Republic would take all necessary measures to protect its national interests.

Iran also maintained that the alleged strike violated Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of another state.

Tehran argued that the incident risked further inflaming and expanding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
