INEC Plans Systems Audit, Mock Presidential Poll Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is considering a full audit of its electoral technology systems and a mock presidential election as key steps to strengthen preparations for the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan disclosed this on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

 According to Amupitan, the proposals stem from lessons and concerns identified during the 2023 general elections, particularly around the reliability of election technology.

The commission is evaluating the feasibility of auditing all its systems and conducting a simulated presidential election to thoroughly test processes and technology before the actual polls.

He noted that these initiatives were not originally included in the commission’s budget but emphasized that INEC would explore avenues to implement them if approved, given their potential to enhance electoral credibility.

The INEC chairman also highlighted ongoing reviews of the commission’s cyber-security architecture, including system redundancy, penetration testing, and disaster recovery mechanisms.

He stressed that public confidence in the electoral process hinges significantly on the reliability of its technology and procedures.

Amupitan listed election technology and cyber-security as priority areas for continued collaboration with the United Kingdom and other international partners, such as the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

“The Commission is committed to delivering elections that are credible, transparent and reflective of the will of Nigerians,” he said.

“Electoral credibility remains a shared responsibility requiring the cooperation of political parties, security agencies, civil society, development partners and citizens.”

The moves signal INEC’s proactive approach to addressing past shortcomings and building greater trust in Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the next general elections.
