Ikeja Electric Reacts To Electrocution on Facility, Warns Unauthorised Electrician To steer Clear of Its Poles, Powerlines
Ikeja Electric Plc has issued a stark warning to residents across its network: stop patronizing unauthorized electricians to work on its poles and power lines.
The warning conveyed in a statement by the utility firm came after recent tragic incidents where individuals attempting to carry out alleged illegal electrical works on the company’s infrastructure lost their lives.
The DisCo said it raised the alarm during its September Virtual Stakeholder Engagement, a monthly interactive forum where it educates customers, gives operational updates and addresses service delivery issues.
Quoting Olaniyi Olayiwola, Head, Quality, Health, Safety & Environment, the company according to the statement signed by Kingsley Okotie said that it is deeply worried by the growing trend of customers hiring unqualified persons to climb its poles and tamper with its installations.
Olayiwola cautioned customers against allowing anyone who is not authorized by Ikeja Electric to climb poles, work on power lines, or carry out illegal connections, describing such acts as a death trap.
“Please do not engage electricians to climb Ikeja Electric poles. If you see someone carrying out unsafe activities around our infrastructure, kindly report to us,” he warned.
He disclosed that some of the recent fatalities recorded were persons who had no training, no safety gear and no authorization to go near high-voltage lines but attempted to fix faults themselves.

Olayiwola stressed that residents should never attempt to confront or stop such persons directly, but should immediately alert Ikeja Electric through its designated safety emergency channels for swift intervention.
He also urged landlords, builders and communities to respect clearance limits around high-voltage lines, warning that encroachment and lack of right-of-way remain major killers in Lagos.
Beyond safety, the engagement also clarified the Meter Asset Provider, MAP, refund process. The company said customers who paid for meters will get refunds as energy credits spread over an approved period and can track everything – cost, monthly refund, total received, last refund date and token – on its online refund dashboard.
Customers with refund issues were advised to use official complaint channels or visit the nearest undertaking office instead of patronizing touts who promise to fast-track refunds.
Speaking on the initiative, Head of Corporate Communications, Kingsley Okotie, said: “Our engagement with customers goes beyond providing information. It is about ensuring that our customers have the knowledge and channels they need to stay safe, seek assistance and get their concerns properly addressed.”
