How gunmen attacked Adeleke’s convoy – Commissioner
Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, has confirmed an attack on the convoy of Governor Ademola Adeleke shortly after the governor left the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Olanipekun.
Attack on governor’s convoy
The incident occurred on Wednesday in Osogbo, shortly after Adeleke visited the monarch following the presentation of his Certificate of Return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Adeleke had earlier received the Certificate of Return from INEC in Osogbo after being declared the winner of the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election.
Following the presentation, the governor proceeded to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo at Ojaba to pay a courtesy visit to the traditional ruler and express appreciation.
Hoodlums opened fire
According to Alimi, hoodlums opened fire on the governor’s convoy as it was filing out of the monarch’s palace, causing panic among people in the area.
The commissioner confirmed that security personnel attached to the governor responded to the attack and successfully repelled the assailants.
“They are hoodlums, and the governor’s security repelled them. They attacked the governor’s convoy at Ataoja’s palace. No casualty,” Alimi said.
The shooting reportedly caused residents and other people around the palace to seek safety as the sound of gunfire created panic in the area.
No casualty reported
Although details surrounding the identities of the attackers and their motive remained unclear at the time of filing this report, the state government confirmed that no life was lost in the incident.
The attack came at a politically significant moment for Adeleke, who had just received official documentation confirming his victory in the governorship election.
Adeleke secured 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 444,815 votes.
Security agencies expected to investigate
Adeleke won in 19 of the 30 local government areas in the state, while Oyebamiji won 11 local government areas.
The reported attack has heightened concerns over security in Osun State, particularly following weeks of political activities and tensions surrounding the governorship election.
Security agencies are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify those responsible for the attack.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the police detailing the number of attackers involved, whether any arrests had been made or the type of weapons allegedly used.
Alimi’s confirmation, however, established that the governor’s convoy was attacked and that security operatives responded to repel the assailants.
The commissioner’s statement that there was no casualty provided some relief amid the panic generated by the shooting.
Authorities are expected to provide further details as investigations into the incident continue.
