Horrifying moment Indian tourist plunges 40 feet from zipline after safety lock 'fails'

A tourist was left with multiple fractures and suspected nerve damage after plunging approximately 40 feet from a zipline when its safety lock allegedly gave way, according to reports from India.

Kuber Surpur, from Vijayapura in the Indian state of Karnataka, was taking part in the ride at a resort in Dandeli when he reportedly fell partway through the course.

The dramatic footage of the incident appears to show him dropping from a height before hitting the ground.

He suffered fractures to both his arms and legs, along with suspected nerve damage, and was rushed to Dandeli Government Hospital for emergency treatment.

He was later moved to a hospital in Vijayapura, and then referred on to Miraj, a town roughly 200 miles away known for specialist medical care, so he could receive more advanced treatment.

Surpur’s family says the safety lock attached to the zipline harness failed while he was suspended in midair, sending him crashing to the ground.

They claim the equipment appeared worn and poorly maintained, and have accused resort staff of negligence.

Meanwhile, the resort has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.

The clip has sparked a wave of concern on social media, with users calling for tighter safety checks and regular equipment inspections at adventure parks across the country.

Zipline and adventure tourism have boomed in India in recent years, with dozens of resorts offering the activity, but critics say oversight of safety standards has failed to keep pace with demand.

One social media user wrote, “This is a horrible zipline design. The belts should be stuck to his body such that he doesn’t fall even if he leaves the rope. How was something like this even approved?!”

Another added, “Let me guess. Some petty fine. A few weeks of shutdown, and the resort is good to go. No justice.”

It is not yet known whether local authorities have launched a formal investigation into the incident or whether the resort has suspended zipline operations while checks are carried out.
