The Kano state government is to take out 10,000 youths from the streets in the next one year in a fight against drug abuse, the chairman Multi Agency Taskforce on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Muhyi Magaji Rimingado, has said.

While addressing newsmen in Kano, weekend, he stated the processes the government plans to take and explained that they will clampdown on identified points within communities, to get them rehabilitated and given career guidance and reintegrated into the society.

“We have plans to take 10,000 youths out of the streets and reintegrate into the society in the next one year,” he stated.

He stated further that in collaboration with the state’s correctional centers, the plan will be in clusters.

Meanwhile, the drug abuse committee is rehabilitating centres across the state, including Madobi, Danbatta, Gezawa and Dawakintofa ahead of the project.

They have clampdown on several individuals who have been remanded and are being rehabilitated.

“This has not only reduced thuggery and gang violence, but has also made the streets safer,” he stated.

He said 71 arrests were made, 4 convictions were achieved, but that not all of them are in the correctional centers.

“They undergo tests and those found to be positive of only one substance are rehabilitated within a period of a month,” he added.

Those found to be positive of more than one drug are remanded. Presently there are 41 of such in Kiru and three gang leaders have so far been convicted by the court and are spending a period of 58 months in correctional center.
