Fighter jets scrambled as Russian missile explodes in Poland sparking all-out war fears

NATO deployed fighter jets over Poland early on Thursday (30 July) following confirmation that at least one suspected Russian missile had entered its airspace before crashing in a field.

Video footage captured smoke billowing from the Lublin region, where a crater was discovered after air raid sirens had been activated. Initial reports claimed a Russian missile had been shot down by a NATO fighter over Polish territory after crossing from Ukraine, which was experiencing intense attacks.

However, Polish operational command reported an “unidentified object” had come down on its soil while multiple missiles were flying near the border but within Ukrainian airspace. One “unidentified object” – believed to be a missile – had penetrated Polish airspace.

Some accounts indicated it was a Kh-101 missile fired from a Russian strategic bomber. Local residents in Targowisko reported hearing a powerful explosion early this morning. “At 3:29 AM, the closest approach was made by one of the objects,” operational command stated.

“At 3:40 AM, an unidentified object was detected in Polish airspace moving westward. An F-16 fighter jet was dispatched to the area to identify and intercept it.

“At 3:46 AM, before a clear identification could be made, the object disappeared from radar detection. To verify and ultimately confirm the radar’s technical indications, an Mi-24 helicopter was dispatched to the area of the last detection.”

“The helicopter crew located the probable crash site of the object in an undeveloped area near the town of Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin Voivodeship. A Ground Search and Rescue Team and appropriate services were dispatched to the scene. Operational and security operations are ongoing at the scene,” operational command added.

Emergency responders, law enforcement, and a military helicopter were deployed, discovering a crater in a field encircled by woodland. The location was cordoned off while Polish military authorities conduct their investigation.

The “crash site” is approximately four miles from Otrocz, situated roughly 56 miles from the Ukrainian border. The alarming development occurred after Warsaw’s operational command had deployed fighter jets during a fierce night of Russian strikes, which brought death and devastation to neighboring Ukraine.

Should a deliberate missile breach into NATO territory be verified, it would represent a serious escalation of the conflict by Putin’s military. Such breaches have been anticipated amid concerns that Russia aims to expand its war to encompass frontline Western nations.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense said in a statement posted to Telegram on Thursday that it had carried out a “massive strike using long-range precision weapons from land, air, and sea” as well as attack drones on military sites across Ukraine.

Other recent Russian attacks have included drone violations into the airspace of NATO member Romania.

Polish operational command stated: “The country’s air defence radars observed the activity of at least a dozen missiles operating over western Ukraine, which, due to their flight direction, could pose a potential threat to Polish airspace.

“One of the objects approached the Polish border at approximately 5 km at 3:29 AM before changing flight direction and heading east.” This occurred prior to the breach of Polish airspace.

During a devastating night for Ukraine, massive strikes pounded the nation, resulting in at least eight fatalities and 30 injuries.

In Kryvyi Rih – President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown – an entire family, including children, was killed as Ukraine endured attacks from ballistic missiles, Zircon hypersonic missiles, and drones.

Three youngsters – a six-year-old girl and two boys aged 11 and 17 – were among those who died. Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s defense council, said it was a direct strike by a Russian Iskander-M ballistic, as he branded it a “dark night”.
