Ex-SGF Babachir Lawal Warns Against Supporting Atiku in 2027

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has cautioned Nigerians against backing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election, accusing him of promoting ethnic politics.

Lawal, speaking in a telephone interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday, alleged that Atiku was behind moves to replace Suleiman Omar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Adamawa State, with Tukur Modibbo.

“Atiku Abubakar wants to replace Suleiman Omar as the governorship candidate of the ADC in Adamawa State with Alhaji Tukur Modibbo,” Lawal claimed, insisting Omar had already been duly elected at the party primaries.

He further accused Atiku of pursuing politics driven by ethnic considerations, warning Nigerians not to entrust him with leadership in 2027.

However, Atiku swiftly denied the allegations. In a statement issued by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, the former vice president described the claims as “false, baseless, and the product of fertile imagination.”

The statement stressed that Atiku had no involvement in any plot to alter the ADC governorship ticket, adding:

“At no time has His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, held any meeting, issued any directive or participated in any discussion aimed at replacing the duly nominated governorship candidate of the party in Adamawa State.”

It further argued that those behind the allegations were uncomfortable with the growing unity within the ADC and were attempting to sow discord.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to due process, internal democracy, and adherence to its constitutionally recognised organs.
