Ex-CCT Chairman Danladi Umar Secures N100m Bail in EFCC Case

• Court dismisses EFCC’s objections, says prosecution failed to prove Umar is a flight risk.

• Former Code of Conduct Tribunal chairman faces four-count charge over alleged abuse of office.

• Case adjourned until October 29 as Umar remains in Kuje Correctional Centre pending bail conditions.

Former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, has been granted N100 million bail by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, Abuja, following his arraignment on corruption-related charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Peter Kekemeke admitted the former tribunal chairman to bail in the sum of N100 million, with one surety in like amount who must possess a valid Certificate of Occupancy (C of O).

Umar was arraigned on a four-count charge accusing him of allegedly conferring undue advantage on himself while serving as chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

During the hearing, defence counsel urged the court to grant bail, arguing that the defendant had earlier enjoyed administrative bail from the EFCC and had consistently honoured every invitation extended to him throughout the investigation.

The prosecution opposed the application, contending that Umar could abscond and interfere with witnesses, some of whom served under him during his tenure as CCT chairman.

However, Justice Kekemeke ruled that the EFCC failed to establish that the defendant was either a flight risk or likely to interfere with prosecution witnesses, and consequently granted the bail application.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter until October 29, 2026, for the commencement of trial.

Pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, Umar will remain at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
