The Enugu state government has achieved another significant public health milestone under Governor Peter Mbah, recording zero cases of cholera this year even as Nigeria has reported more than 65,000 suspected cases in the other 35 states.

The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Jide Idris, singled out Enugu as the only state in Nigeria yet to report a cholera case, attributing the feat to the proactive measures of the state government.

He dismissed suggestions that cases were being concealed, stating that “the government is seriously proactive.”

He also described the Enugu government as “serious-minded” and “active in doing the needful.”

He stated that it is significant because cholera is an all-year-round disease that typically peaks during the rainy season, when the risk of transmission through contaminated water and poor sanitation is heightened.

He added that it is yet another indication that the emphasis of the Mbah administration on preventive healthcare, stronger public health systems, sanitation, surveillance and accessible healthcare infrastructure is producing tangible results.
