Did Trump Get Booed at FIFA World Cup Final? Here's What We Know

Ahead of the match, Trump said he backed Argentina to win Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain, stating it is “hard to bet against Messi”.

US President Donald Trump was booed by some spectators during the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday. The reaction came after Trump and First Lady Melania Trump appeared on the stadium’s giant screen shortly after Jennifer Hudson performed the US national anthem.

The Associated Press, in its live coverage of the event, reported that boos were heard when the president appeared on the big screen. A livestream by online streamer IShowSpeed also appeared to capture the reaction from sections of the crowd.

In the video, IShowSpeed could be heard saying, “Oh, okay,” as boos were audible after Trump appeared on screen.

Trump later watched the match from a VIP suite alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. First Lady Melania Trump was also present. Reports said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum attended the final.

Videos circulating online prompted widespread discussion on social media, with users claiming the boos were also audible on the television broadcast.

One user wrote: “Hahhaa love it! Everyone booed when Trump and the bald headed dude came on tv.” Another posted: “I’m so happy trump and the US national anthem got booed. Why was it even sung at a match which has nothing to do with America!?!?”

A third user asked: “Not watching the World Cup pregame because it will most probably be tacky but my daughter said Trump got booed. Is that so?”

Another wrote: “Trump got booed at the World Cup Final…but thats fine bc its Spain and Argentina fans…Spain is about to not have a country and Argentina has zero reason to hate on America.”

Trump arrived at the stadium aboard Marine One and was expected to present the World Cup trophy to the winning team following the match.

Earlier in the tournament, he spoke publicly about his relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, saying he had contacted him following the red card shown to US forward Folarin Balogun.

“You had unforgettable moments. Probably the most unforgettable is when they gave a gentleman—is it a red card? And I was forced to call Gianni and just make a recommendation… I said I’d like to wage a complaint,” Trump said during a World Cup reception event in New York. “It was so much better the way it worked out because there was no controversy,” he added.

Trump has previously faced boos at other major sporting events, including during an appearance at an NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden earlier this year.
