National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has cautioned against the use of state institutions to manipulate the 2027 general elections, insisting that the credibility of the polls must remain “non-negotiable.”

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from the International Republican Institute, Mark stressed that the elections must be transparent, inclusive, peaceful, and free from intimidation or interference.

He expressed concern over recurring abuses of the electoral process by governments and non-state actors, warning that such practices could erode public confidence and undermine democracy.

Mark cited the violence during the recent Osun governorship election, where reports indicated at least 30 deaths, describing the development as “reprehensible and condemnable.”

“Elections should not be treated as war or a do-or-die affair. Citizens must freely choose their leaders without fear,” he said.

The ADC chairman emphasized that every vote must count and mandates freely given by the electorate must be respected.

He called for secure environments where voters can cast ballots without intimidation.

The IRI delegation, led by African Regional Director Jenai Cox, said its visit was part of a pre-election assessment mission to evaluate Nigeria’s preparedness for the 2027 polls and engage stakeholders on potential challenges.
