Couple made tragic final call before plunging to death in 300ft bungee jump

An engaged couple tragically lost their lives just hours after making a fateful phone call.

Alberto Galletti, 25, and Tiziana Accora, 26, were traveling when they arrived at the Ponte Canale bridge near the town of Polino, in Italy, about 60 miles north of Rome, on the evening of May 1, 2002.

The pair shared an ambition to bungee jump and had found a place where they could together, on camera.

Alberto was an active paratrooper with extensive experience in high-risk jumps and altitude-based activities. Tiziana, meanwhile, was eager to attempt her inaugural bungee jump.

However, the couple quickly realized they were running behind schedule, and the Polino Bungee Jumping Centre would have already shut down by their arrival time, reports the Irish Mirror.

In a final effort, the pair contacted the business, pleading with staff members to stay open. Site manager Lorenzo Illuminati agreed to wait for their arrival.

Describing the situation to state television afterward, he said: “I had actually closed when they called. They begged me to stay open, so I waited for them.”

Just one hour earlier, another couple had successfully completed the identical jump that Alberto and Tiziana would later attempt, so nothing appeared particularly hazardous, Illuminati explained.

However, when Alberto and Tiziana jumped from the 100-meter-high bridge, embracing one another, the cord malfunctioned.

Rather than bouncing back upward, the couple dropped the entire 330ft to the canyon floor beneath them. As was routine procedure at the facility, the jump was being recorded – video intended to serve as a memento of the experience.

Instead, it documented the couple’s final moments.

“They jumped off together in each other’s arms, and then this happened. It’s terrible,” said Illuminati.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Polino Bungee Jumping Centre was closed while a comprehensive investigation took place.
