Choppy Waters Turn Deadly: Video From Vietnam Shows Site Where Boat Capsized, 15 Indians Killed
A tragic incident occurred off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island when a speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists capsized, resulting in the deaths of 15 individuals.
A video purportedly showing the aftermath of the deadly tourist boat accident off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island has surfaced online, capturing an overturned speedboat surrounded by rescue vessels as emergency teams race to save passengers. Times Now Digital could not independently verify the authenticity of the footage.
The visuals, shared by a local journalist on social media, were accompanied by a claim that the speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island at around 10:30 am local time on Saturday.
Vietnamese authorities have since confirmed that 15 Indian tourists were killed after the speedboat overturned in rough seas while returning from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port. The vessel was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese crew members. According to local authorities, 21 people were rescued, several of whom sustained injuries and were shifted to hospitals for treatment.
Rescue operations were launched immediately with the help of nearby boats before being joined by Vietnam’s border guards, navy and coast guard. Preliminary reports suggest strong winds and choppy waters may have contributed to the accident, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy, saying the victims were employees of a private mobile phone company who had travelled to Vietnam for an annual meeting. He said Indian Embassy officials were present at the site and that the government was extending all possible assistance to those affected and their families.
The Indian Embassy in Hanoi said it was in constant touch with Vietnamese authorities and was closely monitoring rescue and relief efforts.
“In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists has capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. Local authorities are undertaking search and rescue operations. Embassy officials are on the ground. We are in close touch with Vietnamese authorities,” the mission said.
To assist affected families, the Indian mission has established emergency control rooms at both the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City and the Embassy of India in Hanoi.
The emergency contact numbers issued by the mission are:
Consulate General of India, Ho Chi Minh City
Embassy of India, Hanoi
The helplines will remain operational to provide updates and assistance to the families of those affected by the tragedy.
Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, known for its beaches and island-hopping tours. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the capsize.
