Chaos Erupts at Ondo Assmbly as Suspected Thugs Invade Amid Speaker’s Impeachment Battle
The Ondo State House of Assembly descended into chaos on Thursday after suspected thugs stormed the legislative complex in the heat of the impeachment saga against Speaker Olamide Oladiji.
Witnesses said the intruders combed the hallways, barging from office to office in what appeared to be a brazen attempt to intimidate lawmakers and staff. For several tense minutes, the Assembly’s activities were paralyzed as workers barricaded themselves inside offices to avoid confrontation.
Sources alleged the thugs were mobilized to frustrate moves to remove the Speaker, who is facing an impeachment push over allegations of financial misconduct, including the diversion of ₦44 million from the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC).
One staff member, speaking anonymously, revealed that it took the combined intervention of Hon. Oguntodu, other lawmakers, and security operatives to force the invaders out. “They were moving erratically, and no one could ascertain their specific mission until the intervention occurred,” the source said.
The impeachment drive has gathered momentum, with 22 out of 26 members reportedly signing a notice demanding Oladiji’s resignation. In response to Thursday’s incident, security has been reinforced around the Assembly, while lawmakers continue a marathon meeting behind closed doors.
