President Trump is threatening to raise tariffs on Canada over wildfire smoke drifting into the US, blaming the country for poor forest management. Trump said he plans to call Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and called the recurring smoke problem an act of “willful negligence.”

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has drifted south again this summer, and President Trump wants Canada to pay for it. The president is threatening to raise tariffs on the country, arguing that the pollution crossing into American skies should come with a financial cost attached.

Wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada has become something the Midwest and Northeast now deal with almost every year. This smoke does real damage to air quality, putting millions of people at risk of both short term and long term health problems.

He didn’t stop at describing the problem. Trump wrote that Canada “has refused to engage in basic Forest Management and Debris Removal, knowing that such refusal will lead to exactly this result,” framing the smoke as a pattern of neglect rather than a one time event. He called it “willful Negligence” and said the recurring smoke has become an annual occurrence that costs the United States billions of dollars.

That cost, he argued, should now be reflected in trade policy. Trump wrote that “the cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying.”

Trump also said he intends to speak directly with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to press him on what the country plans to do about the smoke. “I will call the Prime Minister during the day to find out what they are going to do about it,” Trump wrote.
