Breaking: Maiden National Intermediate Games postponed

The inaugural National Intermediate Games scheduled to hold in Lagos from October 1 to 15, 2026, have been postponed to the first quarter of 2027 to allow organisers to undertake further preparations and deliver what the authorities described as a successful and world-class maiden edition.

The development was contained in a statement signed on Tuesday by Kola Daniel, Special Adviser on Media in the Office of the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), following a comprehensive review of preparations for the Games by the Local Organising Committee (LOC), the NSC and an independent Quality Control and Assurance Specialist.

The decision followed the Joint Technical Meeting held from September 3 to 6, 2026 during which key aspects of the preparations for the national sporting event were subjected to detailed assessment. Blueprint reports

Lagos communicates postponement

The Lagos State Sports Commission formally communicated the decision to the National Sports Commission after the technical review of preparations for the Games.

The assessment examined a wide range of areas considered critical to the successful hosting of the inaugural edition, including the proposed sporting facilities, events to be contested, technical requirements, rules and regulations, as well as other operational issues connected with the organisation of the competition.

Although the review established that the Games were technically capable of proceeding as scheduled in October, it also found that the remaining period before the proposed opening date might not provide sufficient time to deliver the inaugural edition to the standard considered appropriate for Lagos and an event of national significance.

Quality takes priority

The decision to postpone the Games is therefore aimed at protecting the quality and credibility of the competition rather than proceeding with an event that may not meet the desired standard.

According to the statement, the National Intermediate Games are expected to establish an operational benchmark that can guide the planning and delivery of future editions.

The authorities consequently considered additional preparation time necessary to ensure that the maiden edition is properly organised and capable of setting the standard expected of a major national sporting event.

The postponement is also expected to give the various organising bodies more time to address outstanding technical, operational and logistical requirements before a new date is announced.

Lagos reaffirms commitment

Despite the postponement, Lagos state has reaffirmed its commitment to hosting the inaugural National Intermediate Games.

The host state is expected to continue preparations in collaboration with the NSC and other stakeholders while awaiting the finalisation of a new date by the Local Organising Committee.

The new date will be determined by the LOC after further consultations and assessment of the level of preparedness required to stage the competition successfully in the first quarter of 2027.

The decision therefore does not amount to a withdrawal by Lagos State from its hosting responsibility, but rather provides additional time for the state and other stakeholders to strengthen preparations for the event.

NSC activities to continue

Meanwhile, the NSC will continue with its programme towards the Games despite the postponement of the main event.

The commission will proceed with activities already within its immediate purview, including accreditation, zonal elimination for team sports and other technical and operational preparations.

The continuation of these activities is expected to ensure that the postponement does not halt the wider preparatory process and that the various participating structures remain on course for the rescheduled Games.

The zonal elimination process for team sports and accreditation arrangements will therefore continue as planned, alongside other technical and operational activities being coordinated by the NSC.

New date to be announced

The National Intermediate Games were originally scheduled for October 1 to 15, 2026, in Lagos, but will now take place in the first quarter of 2027.

The exact date for the rescheduled competition is yet to be announced and will be finalised by the Local Organising Committee after further preparations and consultations with the relevant stakeholders.

The postponement followed a technical review involving the LOC, the NSC and an independent Quality Control and Assurance Specialist, with the assessment covering facilities, sporting events, technical standards, rules, regulations and other critical operational areas.

While the review found that the Games could technically go ahead, organisers concluded that more time was required to guarantee the standard expected of the inaugural edition.

The authorities said the decision was ultimately taken in the interest of the quality, credibility and long-term success of the National Intermediate Games, with the organisers determined to ensure that the maiden edition establishes a strong operational benchmark for subsequent editions.
