The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three men to life imprisonment for concealing information about the masterminds behind the kidnapping of students and teachers in Oriire, Oyo State.

The convicts were found guilty after pleading guilty to charges filed by the Federal Government, admitting that they deliberately withheld information that could have assisted security agencies in identifying those responsible for the attack.

Justice Salem Ibrahim delivered the judgment after accepting the guilty pleas of the defendants, describing the offences as grave crimes against national security and public safety.

Convicts admitted concealing information

During the court proceedings, the three defendants acknowledged that they had knowledge of the individuals behind the Oriire school kidnapping but failed to disclose the information to the appropriate authorities.

Their admission formed the basis of their conviction, with the court holding that concealing information relating to terrorist and kidnapping activities amounted to a serious criminal offence.

The prosecution argued that the defendants’ actions frustrated efforts by security agencies to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.

Following their guilty pleas, the court sentenced each of the three men to life imprisonment.

Membership of Ansaru affiliate

The defendants also admitted to belonging to Darul Salam, a group identified by the Federal Government as an affiliate of the outlawed terrorist organisation Ansaru.

According to the prosecution, the group’s activities are linked to extremist operations, while its members allegedly provide support to terrorist networks operating in parts of the country.

Their admission further strengthened the government’s case and underscored concerns about the involvement of extremist groups in cases of kidnapping and violent attacks.

Additional terrorism-related offences

The court heard that two of the convicts, Abdulrazak Umar and Shamsudin Adamu, faced additional charges beyond concealing information.

Both men admitted to providing training and guidance to members of a WhatsApp group known as “The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace.”

They also pleaded guilty to using the platform to encourage and incite members to participate in acts of terrorism.

The prosecution maintained that the online group was used to spread extremist ideology and mobilise support for unlawful activities.

Justice Ibrahim accepted their confessions and convicted them on the additional counts alongside the other offences.

Oriire kidnapping shocked the nation

The Oriire school kidnapping attracted national attention after armed men attacked a school in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, abducting students and teachers.

The incident sparked outrage across the country, with education stakeholders and civil society groups demanding stronger protection for schools and tougher action against kidnappers.

Some victims who later regained their freedom recounted the traumatic conditions they endured while in captivity.

The attack also claimed the lives of two teachers, further heightening public concern over insecurity in schools.

Government intensifies crackdown

The latest judgment represents another significant step in the Federal Government’s efforts to prosecute individuals linked to terrorism and kidnapping.

Authorities have continued investigations into the wider network behind the Oriire abduction, with security agencies working to apprehend other suspects believed to have participated in planning and executing the attack.

The life sentences imposed on the three convicts are expected to serve as a warning to anyone who aids, shelters or conceals information about terrorist or kidnapping syndicates.

The government has repeatedly maintained that it will sustain efforts to dismantle criminal networks threatening the safety of schools and communities across the country, while ensuring that those found culpable face the full weight of the law.
