The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has urged its workforce to embrace ethical conduct, professionalism and core institutional values as critical drivers of effective service delivery. Speaking at the opening of a capacity-building workshop held on Wednesday in Nasarawa State with the theme: “Ethics and Values for Effective Service Delivery at the Nigerian Copyright Commission,” the Director General of the NCC, Dr. John Asein, described staff development as one of the Commission’s key priorities noting that the gathering was an important platform for learning, collaboration and professional growth. Asein who was represented by the Director, Finance and Account, NCC, Mr. Etete Umoudo, explained that the training was organised in line with the federal government’s directive that public servants should be continually equipped with the skills and knowledge required to deliver on their mandates, stressing that the workshop was not merely a routine exercise but a strategic investment in human capital development. According to him, ethics and values remain fundamental to productivity and effective public service, noting that while many government agencies provide services, the quality and impact of those services are often determined by the attitude, integrity and commitment of their personnel. Asein challenged participants to focus on improving their individual performance rather than attributing shortcomings solely to leadership, saying meaningful change begins with every public servant carrying out assigned responsibilities diligently. He further urged staff to reciprocate the Commission’s investment in their professional development by demonstrating positive behavioural changes, improved work ethics, punctuality, stronger interpersonal relationships and greater responsiveness to stakeholders. Describing the NCC as a service-oriented institution, he noted that public perception of the Commission would depend largely on how staff interact with and serve members of the public. He also said the workshop would provide participants with practical knowledge applicable across all levels of the organisation, regardless of rank, while fostering stronger relationships among staff drawn from different offices. According to him, bringing employees together creates opportunities for networking, collaboration and team building, which were essential for achieving the Commission’s objectives. He encouraged participants to take full advantage of the training and ensure they returned to their duty posts with renewed commitment and improved capacity to deliver quality services. The DG while declaring the workshop open, expressed confidence that the workshop would contribute to better response times, improved attitudes to work and sustained institutional growth. Meanwhile, Head, Human Resource Management Department of the Copyright Commission, Mr. Seun Popoola, commended the Director General of NCC, for his commitment to staff development through sustained investment in capacity building despite prevailing economic challenges describing his leadership as exemplary and worthy of emulation across the Public Service. He praised Dr. Asein for consistently approving training programmes for staff, noting that such commitment to human capital development was uncommon in the current economic climate. “In this economy, where many agencies struggle to implement their budgets, the Director-General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission continues to invest in staff education, training and capacity building. That is a remarkable achievement and deserves commendation,” he said. Popoola also lauded the growing collaboration between the Commission and the , expressing confidence that the partnership would continue to strengthen workforce development within the NCC. He urged participants to approach the workshop with a clear sense of purpose, stressing that the training was organised to improve their competence and productivity rather than serve as a routine official engagement. According to him, participants should leave the programme equipped with practical knowledge and skills that would enhance their performance and improve service delivery in the Commission. “This programme is not for charity or allowances. It is an investment in your professional growth. You must return to your offices better prepared to perform your responsibilities effectively and efficiently,” he said. He urged participants to be intentional about their learning by setting clear personal development goals and taking full advantage of the workshop, commending those who had already expressed a desire to return to work with fresh ideas and improved professional competence. Also speaking, the representative of the Director-General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Dr. Raji Michael, Director of Trade Union Education, encouraged participants to be intentional in their learning and fully engage in the workshop, noting that it was designed to equip them with the requisite knowledge, skills and values for effective and efficient service delivery as public servants.
