Another LG chairman dies suddenly
The Chairman of Fufore Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa state, Dr Yahya Saidu, has died less than three months after assuming office, becoming the second successive occupant of the council’s top position to die while serving within 18 months.
Saidu reportedly died on Friday, October 9, 2026, at a hospital in Kaduna state, barely 86 days after he was sworn in as chairman on July 15, following the 2026 local government elections in Adamawa state. Blueprint reports
His death was announced on Saturday by the Adamawa state chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and confirmed in a condolence message by Aliyu Boya Wakili, member of the House of Representatives representing Fufore/Song Federal Constituency.
The development has thrown the council area into mourning, with political associates and public officials expressing grief over the death of a chairman whose tenure had only just begun. It has also revived memories of the death of his predecessor, Shuaibu Babas, who died in office on April 23, 2025.
The loss of two successive chairmen within a relatively short period has placed Fufore in an unusual position, with the council facing another leadership transition before the end of its current administration. However, there is no established evidence linking the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two chairmen.
ALGON chairman mourns Saidu
The Adamawa State chairman of ALGON, Titus Obadiah, expressed sadness over Saidu’s death, describing him as a committed leader who dedicated himself to serving his people.
In a condolence statement issued on Saturday, Obadiah said he received the news with a heavy heart, extending sympathy to the deceased’s family, friends, political associates and the people of Fufore Local Government Area.
He described the death as a significant loss to the council and Adamawa State, noting that Saidu had assumed the responsibility of leading the local government only a few months earlier.
Obadiah also prayed for God to grant the deceased eternal rest and give his family and constituents the strength to bear the loss.
The ALGON chairman’s message added to the expressions of grief following the announcement, as political figures and associates reflected on the abrupt end of Saidu’s tenure.
Although the condolence statement described the late chairman as committed to public service, it did not provide details about the medical circumstances surrounding his death.
Wakili expresses grief over chairman’s death
Wakili, who represents Fufore/Song Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, also expressed condolences to the family and constituents of the late chairman.
The federal lawmaker described Saidu’s passing as a major loss to the people of Fufore and Adamawa State, praying that Almighty Allah would forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
He also asked God to give the deceased’s family, friends, associates and constituents the patience and fortitude to cope with the loss.
Wakili’s reaction reflected the grief among political associates and residents who had expected Saidu to lead the council through the tenure that began in July.
The chairman’s death has cut short his time in office at a point when the new administration would ordinarily be expected to settle into its responsibilities, establish its priorities and begin implementing programmes for the benefit of residents.
Beyond the personal loss to his family, the development raises questions about continuity in the administration of Fufore, although the immediate focus remains on mourning the deceased.
Second Fufore chairman to die in office
Saidu’s death comes approximately 18 months after Babas, his predecessor, died while serving as chairman of Fufore Local Government Area on April 23, 2025.
Babas’s death was followed by a period of uncertainty over the council’s leadership, particularly regarding the succession process involving his deputy, Esther Audu.
Audu was not immediately sworn in following Babas’s death, a delay that generated protests and questions from residents and political stakeholders over the handling of the transition.
She was eventually sworn in as substantive chairman by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri after the delay and public outcry. She subsequently served until the 2026 local government elections, which brought Saidu into office.
Saidu emerged as chairman on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and was sworn in on July 15, 2026.
His death less than three months later means Fufore has again lost its sitting chairman before the completion of the tenure that began with the latest local government elections.
The recurrence of such a loss has drawn attention to the council’s recent leadership history. Nevertheless, the deaths of Babas and Saidu should be treated as separate events unless credible evidence establishes a connection between them.
Leadership transition and continuity of governance
Saidu’s death leaves Fufore facing another leadership transition, with the next steps expected to follow the applicable laws and procedures governing local government administration in Adamawa State.
An orderly succession process will be important to ensuring continuity in the council’s administrative responsibilities and preventing uncertainty over the management of its affairs.
Local government councils constitute an important tier of governance, particularly in communities where residents depend on grassroots administrations for basic services, local infrastructure and development programmes.
The chairman’s office also provides political and administrative leadership for the council, coordinating the activities of relevant officials and helping to determine priorities for local development.
Consequently, the transition following Saidu’s death will be significant not only for the political leadership of Fufore but also for the continuity of its administration.
The previous succession dispute following Babas’s death provides a backdrop to the latest development, although the circumstances are different and no formal announcement on Saidu’s successor had been made in the initial reports.
The relevant authorities are expected to clarify the succession arrangements in line with the applicable legal framework. Until then, details of the transition remain unconfirmed.
Burial arrangements and cause of death
As of Saturday, details of Saidu’s burial arrangements had not been clearly established in the initial announcements. The cause of his death was also not disclosed in the condolence statements issued by ALGON and Wakili.
Reports indicated that he died at a hospital in Kaduna State, but further details about the circumstances surrounding his passing were not immediately available.
The absence of publicly disclosed information on the cause of death means that no medical explanation can responsibly be offered at this stage.
Saidu’s death has brought an abrupt end to a tenure that began in July with the expectations associated with a new administration. For his family, associates and constituents, the immediate concern is the loss of their chairman, while the council must also prepare for the administrative process that follows his passing.
As condolences continue to reach the bereaved family, Fufore faces the task of mourning its late chairman while ensuring that the transition to the next leadership is handled in an orderly manner.
