Andy Burnham Becomes UK Prime Minister After Invitation From King Charles

Andy Burnham has officially become the United Kingdom’s prime minister after being invited by King Charles III to form a government at Buckingham Palace, marking the beginning of a new administration following Keir Starmer’s resignation.

Burnham, the fifth UK prime minister in four years, is expected to travel to 10 Downing Street to deliver his first address as prime minister.

His appointment follows Keir Starmer’s formal resignation after delivering a farewell speech outside Downing Street, where he reflected on his time in office.

“I go with good grace, I go with a smile and I go proud of everything that we have achieved,” Starmer said in his final address.

Burnham assumed the Labour Party leadership on Friday and is expected to outline the priorities of his new government. His administration is anticipated to pursue a range of policy initiatives, with indications that a cut in income tax could be among the measures under consideration.

The new prime minister is also expected to begin reshaping his government later on Monday, with appointments and dismissals of ministers set to take place as he forms his cabinet.

Ahead of the cabinet changes, Prisons Minister Lord Timpson resigned on Monday morning.
