Accord applauds Tinubu’s intervention on Osun account freeze

The National Chairman of Accord party., Chief Maxwell Mgbudem, has commended President Bola Tinubu for directing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to reverse the freezing of the Osun State Government’s bank account.

The party noted that the intervention was timely and necessary to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic process.

The National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem said the President’s action helped prevent what he described as a further descent into constitutional crisis ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.

According to him, the anti-graft agency’s action reinforced concerns about attempts to influence the outcome of the governorship election through the use of federal institutions.

The Accord chairman said the party had lost confidence in the leadership of the EFCC and called for the immediate resignation of the commission’s chairman.

 He further urged President Tinubu to remove the EFCC boss from office if he failed to resign voluntarily, adding that the commission’s actions had embarrassed the government and damaged Nigeria’s democratic image internationally.

Mgbudem also alleged that Accord members and supporters in Osun state had faced attacks, intimidation, arrests and harassment in the build-up to the election.

He said that party offices and campaign facilities had been targeted while security agencies allegedly failed to protect party members or arrest those responsible.

While acknowledging the deployment of a new Commissioner of Police to Osun state by the Inspector-General of Police, the Accord leader appealed to security agencies to remain neutral and carry out their constitutional responsibilities professionally throughout the election period.

He further appealed to President Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police to secure the immediate release of about 60 Accord members reportedly detained in Abuja, Osun and Nasarawa states, saying their release would help reduce political tension ahead of the poll.

Reaffirming the party’s support for Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Mgbudem described the governor’s first term as transformational and urged voters to re-elect him for a second term.

 He said the party was confident of victory, insisting that the electorate should be allowed to choose their governor without intimidation or interference.

The Accord chairman also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free, fair, credible and transparent governorship election.

He also urged the electoral body to ensure all election materials and systems function effectively to avoid operational failures.

He appealed to election observers, civil society organisations, the Nigerian Bar Association, development partners, the media and the international community to closely monitor the election and speak against any actions capable of undermining its credibility.

Mgbudem stressed that security agencies should protect lives and property rather than influence the electoral process, adding that the people of Osun State deserved an election that reflected their freely expressed democratic choice.

 He expressed confidence that Accord was fully prepared for the governorship election and would secure victory based on what he described as the achievements of the Adeleke administration.
