Abuja Court Sentences Al-Qaeda-Linked Terrorist Commander to Life Imprisonment

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Abubakar Abba, commander of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansaru terrorist group, to life imprisonment for terrorism-related offences.  

Abba, also known as Abu Bara, and his co-accused, Mahmud Usman (also known as Isah Adam or Mahmud), were convicted on Monday after pleading guilty to a 32-count terrorism charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) on behalf of the Federal Government.

 Delivering judgment, Justice Emeka Nwite sentenced the duo to life imprisonment on counts 30 and 31, and 20 years imprisonment on the remaining counts.

The judge ordered that the sentences on other counts should begin from the date of their arrest.

 The convicts were arrested in separate operations by the DSS between May and July 2025.

They faced charges including terrorism, terrorism financing, kidnapping for ransom, illegal mining, funding of terrorism, and fabrication of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Prosecutors accused them of coordinating sleeper cells, planning attacks, and maintaining ties with terrorist groups in the Sahel and Maghreb regions.

During arraignment, Usman had pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of illegal mining for the purpose of funding terrorism and arms procurement, attracting a 15-year prison sentence.

 The judgment underscores ongoing efforts by Nigerian security agencies and the judiciary to combat terrorism and bring high-profile insurgents to justice.
