2027 elections: Northern Igbo back Tinubu

The Igbo community in Northern Nigeria has resolved to end what it described as years of political fence-sitting and mobilise massively in support of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

The newly appointed Director-General of the Igbo Political Movement, Northern Nigeria, High Chief John Amaechi Onwe, disclosed this in Kaduna while speaking during a congratulatory visit by the Igbo Community Welfare Association (ICWA) over his appointment.

Onwe said Igbo communities across the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory had discussed their political experiences and resolved to correct what he described as past mistakes by actively participating in the 2027 elections.

“Whatever mistake done before must be corrected this 2027. We are ready to fully support Tinubu. This time around, we don’t want to be opposition. We have been opposition long enough,” he said.

He said the decision to support Tinubu was based on what the group considered improvements in the economy and adequate representation of Igbos in his administration.

Onwe said the community would no longer remain on the sidelines during elections, adding that its members were being mobilised and educated to come out and vote massively for the President.

“We have over 15 million Igbos in Northern Nigeria and we will be giving the President over two million Igbo votes,” he said.

He said the 2027 election would mark a departure from previous elections, stressing that the Igbo community in the North had collectively agreed to support Tinubu and ensure greater participation in the electoral process.

Earlier, the President-General of ICWA Kaduna, Chief Walter Temple Chukwuma, congratulated Onwe on his appointment as Director-General of the political movement, describing it as a source of joy and honour to the Igbo community.

Chukwuma said Onwe had represented the Igbo community well in Kaduna and prayed for wisdom, strength and courage for him to successfully discharge his new responsibilities.
