2027 elections: INEC reactivates online registration portal
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has maintained an online platform for voter registration and other electoral services as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections.
The portal provides prospective voters with options to begin registration online, update their personal information, request transfer to another polling unit and apply for replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). Blueprint reports
The development comes as Nigeria approaches another general election cycle, with eligible citizens expected to ensure that their registration details are accurate and that they possess the necessary voting credentials.
INEC’s online platform also provides access to voter verification and information on designated registration centres across the country.
Online registration and physical verification
Under the Commission’s registration framework, eligible Nigerians can initiate their registration electronically before completing the required biometric procedures at designated centres.
The process is intended to reduce the time applicants spend at registration offices while improving access to voter registration services.
Applicants are required to provide their personal information and follow the instructions on the portal. Those undertaking pre-registration are expected to select an appointment and visit an appropriate INEC registration centre for biometric capture and completion of the process.
The Commission’s guidelines also provide for applicants who prefer to commence and complete their registration physically at designated centres.
The registration process is open to Nigerian citizens who have attained the age of 18 and those who were eligible but failed to register during previous exercises.
Citizens who have experienced difficulties with their previous registration records may also use the appropriate services provided by the Commission.
INEC introduces additional self-service options
Beyond first-time registration, the portal provides services for registered voters seeking to correct or update their information.
These include requests for transfer to another polling unit, replacement of damaged or missing PVCs and verification of registration details.
The platform also provides information on locations where voters can collect previously unclaimed cards.
The introduction of these electronic services forms part of INEC’s broader effort to incorporate technology into electoral administration and make voter services more accessible.
In July 2026, the Commission announced an online self-service registration option for eligible first-time voters, alongside an extension of the then-ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise.
The initiative was designed to provide additional opportunities for prospective voters to begin the registration process electronically.
Registration deadline and 2027 election preparations
INEC’s published Continuous Voter Registration schedule cover the period from August 18, 2025, to August 30, 2026.
The exercise was organised in phases, with the final registration phase scheduled to run from May 4 to August 17, 2026, followed by the display of the voters’ register for claims and objections between August 24 and 30.
The Commission had earlier described the exercise as a major opportunity for eligible Nigerians to register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, the continued availability of online services does not, by itself, establish that the general registration window has been formally reopened.
Prospective applicants are therefore expected to confirm the applicable registration arrangements and deadlines through INEC’s official channels before proceeding.
2027 elections approach
The 2027 general elections will determine the next President and members of the National Assembly, alongside governorship and state assembly positions in states participating in the election cycle.
INEC’s published electoral calendar currently lists January 16, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, while the governorship and state assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
The Commission has continued engagements with political parties and other stakeholders on preparations for the polls, including electoral logistics, voter education and the integrity of the national register.
INEC warns against multiple registration
The Commission has also repeatedly cautioned eligible Nigerians against registering more than once.
According to INEC, its technological systems are capable of identifying duplicate registration records, which may be removed from the voters’ register.
The Commission has maintained that multiple registration is unlawful and urged citizens to use the appropriate procedures for correcting existing records rather than attempting fresh registration where they are already registered.
The integrity of the voters’ register remains a major component of electoral credibility, particularly as the country prepares for another nationwide election.
INEC has also encouraged citizens to verify their registration status and ensure that outstanding issues relating to their voter information are addressed through approved channels.
With the 2027 elections approaching, access to voter services, accurate registration records and public awareness of electoral procedures remain important aspects of preparations for the polls.
