2027: ‘Church Not Place for Political Campaigns’ – Adeyanju Criticises Peter Obi

Rights activist Deji Adeyanju has cautioned against the use of religion in politics, declaring that the church should not be turned into a platform for political campaigns.

In a statement on Tuesday, Adeyanju warned that mixing religion with politics could deepen divisions in Nigeria.

He criticised what he described as the renewed patronage of churches by Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi.

“Elections should be about ideas, policies and competing visions for Nigeria. Religion and politics should never be allowed to become instruments of division,” Adeyanju said.

He stressed that the Electoral Act 2026 prohibits the use of places of worship for political campaigns and condemned both the gathering of clerics to endorse President Bola Tinubu and Obi’s alleged return to religious mobilisation.

“The church is not a place for political campaigns or political gimmicks, and politicians are not pastors. Pastors and religious leaders should stop giving politicians platforms to campaign or seek endorsements in church,” he added.

Adeyanju urged religious leaders to preserve the sanctity of worship spaces, warning that repeating the precedent set in 2023 could worsen national divisions.
