2026 World Cup: Mbappe Edges Messi In Golden Boot Race After Quarter-Finals

France captain Kylian Mbappé has taken the lead in the race for the adidas Golden Boot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, edging ahead of Argentina skipper Lionel Messi despite both stars being tied on eight goals after the quarter-final stage.

Mbappé returned to the top of the scoring chart after netting his eighth goal in France’s quarter-final victory over Morocco. While both players have scored the same number of goals, the French forward holds the advantage with three assists, compared to Messi’s two.

According to FIFA’s Golden Boot rules, assists serve as the first tie-breaker when players finish level on goals. Should players remain tied after assists, the award is decided by total minutes played, with the player who has spent fewer minutes on the pitch ranked higher.

Mbappé also enjoys an edge in that category, having played fewer minutes than Messi so far in the tournament.

Norway striker Erling Haaland occupies third place with seven goals after scoring twice in his country’s quarter-final win over Brazil.
