Yobe Police Command records 198 convictions, arrests 240 suspects in major crackdown

The Yobe state Police Command Wednesday announced significant operational achievements in its fight against crime by securing 198 convictions and arresting 240 suspects for various criminal offences between July and September.

Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Damaturu, the Commissioner of Police, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, stated that the command recorded a total of 145 criminal cases during the period under review.

The CP said the breakdown includes 16 murder cases, 9 rape cases, 1 kidnap case, 2 extortion cases, 5 armed robbery cases and 112 other offences.

Providing an update on the status of the cases, CP Jibrin noted that through diligent investigation and prosecution, 198 cases secured convictions, while 2 cases resulted in acquittals. Additionally, 26 cases are currently before the courts, 10 are still under investigation and 4 are awaiting legal advice.

“These gains reflect our resolve to both detained offenders and ensure prosecution via thorough probes and firm action,” the commissioner stated,

He added the command’s commitment to intelligence -led policing.

The CP highlighted several key successes recorded by the command’s tactical units. He said in a crackdown on criminal dens and drug-related activity, operatives apprehended 171 suspected narcotics vendors and consumers. Recoveries during these operations, he said, included illicit narcotics, banned items, and dangerous weapons.

“In a specific incident in Fika, police operatives subdued a suspect during a shootout, while another suspect was arrested in a separate event.

“The command also intercepted a suspect arriving from Maiduguri with the intent to vandalise vehicles, thwarting the plan before any fatalities could occur.

“The command recorded significant breakthroughs in financial crimes. One suspect was arrested in connection with fraud and the misappropriation of N77 million.

“In a separate case, another individual was detained for obtaining funds and goods through fraudulent bank transfer alerts.

“Relying on technical intelligence, officers also arrested two suspects who allegedly extorted N630,000 from two victims under duress.The suspects reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation,” the CP added.
