Wike Reveals How He Narrowly Escaped $2 Million Blackmail Plot

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has recounted how he almost became a victim of an elaborate $2 million blackmail scheme while serving in office.

Wike made the disclosure during a media parley on Thursday, describing how an individual falsely claimed to have paid his son $2 million to secure a land allocation in the FCT.

According to the minister, the alleged blackmailer approached the Department of State Services (DSS) with the claim, stating that he had given the money to Wike’s son at night.

However, official records quickly debunked the story.“He said that two million was given at night, that’s 9 p.m., 8 p.m., two million dollars,” Wike narrated.

“But see how, unknown to him, that day in the morning, my son travelled on British Airways.”

Investigators confirmed through British Airways records that Wike’s son had left Nigeria on a morning flight the same day the supposed nighttime transaction occurred, collapsing the blackmailer’s timeline.

 Wike said he was alerted to the plot by a contact at the Presidential Villa. He promptly had the suspect arrested.

When intermediaries later approached him suggesting he “settle” the matter quietly to avoid embarrassment, Wike refused, describing the scheme as “cheap blackmail.”

“I said, ‘Settle what? Settle what? This is cheap blackmail. I will not allow that.’ And we didn’t do it,” he stated.

 The minister used the incident to illustrate how public officials are often targeted with fabricated allegations aimed at embarrassing the government or extracting concessions.

He drew parallels with recent claims made by one Adeyemi against President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Wike argued that genuine complainants should present evidence directly to security agencies rather than making public accusations, referencing how his own case was thoroughly investigated with travel and communication records.
