ABUJA — A former presidential candidate and pioneer Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, Shitu Mohammed Kabir, has called on National Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Obi to throw his weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Kabir, who is also a double national honoree, said in a statement that supporting Tinubu for a second term offers Nigeria the best path to continuity, stability, and national development.

The statesman predicted victory for the President at the polls and urged Obi to “work with the President for sustained political relevance and national progress.”

“Politics should be like football: competitors contest vigorously, but after the final whistle, they shake hands and work together for the good of the nation,” Kabir said.

He argued that Nigeria is at a critical point where policy consistency matters more than partisan rivalry, noting that the Tinubu administration’s reforms need time to mature.

According to Kabir, a second term for Tinubu would consolidate ongoing infrastructure projects, deepen security reforms, and provide the stability investors and citizens need.

As pioneer IPAC Chairman, Kabir said he has watched Nigeria’s democracy evolve and believes that opposition leaders must prioritize nation-building over perpetual confrontation.

He described the President’s economic and governance agenda as “difficult but necessary,” and said abandoning it mid-way would risk reversing the gains already recorded.

Kabir’s call is the latest in a growing wave of appeals for political unity ahead of 2027, with several elder statesmen urging key opposition figures to consider alignment for national interest.

The former presidential candidate stressed that endorsing Tinubu would not diminish Obi’s political profile, but rather position him as a statesman committed to Nigeria’s progress.

He added that collaboration between government and opposition after elections is a global democratic norm that Nigeria must embrace to strengthen institutions.

“We must move beyond elections and govern together. That is how democracies deliver. That is how Nigeria will get it right,” Kabir concluded.
