Who Is Abdul Karim Mustafa? Wilson, NC, Courthouse Shooting Suspect Identified

Investigators believe the attack was an act of retaliation linked to a separate homicide investigation, and Mustafa now faces multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder.

Authorities have identified 21-year-old Abdul Karim Mustafa as the suspect in a shooting outside the Wilson County Courthouse in Wilson, North Carolina, that left a 19-year-old woman in critical condition and injured two law enforcement officers. According to investigators, the shooting happened at around 10:30 AM on Monday outside the courthouse in downtown Wilson.

Police said Mustafa was sitting on a bench in front of the courthouse when he allegedly walked toward a woman as she was entering the building and shot her several times. The 19-year-old woman was critically injured.

After the shooting, Mustafa fled several blocks from the courthouse, where he was confronted by law enforcement officers. Authorities said an exchange of gunfire followed, during which a Wilson police officer was struck in the arm and a Wilson County sheriff’s deputy was hit in his protective vest.

The injured police officer was taken to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville and is expected to recover. Authorities have not released the deputy’s condition.

Investigators later located Mustafa a short distance from the scene and took him into custody.

Police believe the shooting was an act of retaliation connected to the investigation into the fatal shooting of a teenager in Wilson three weeks earlier. According to authorities, the 19-year-old woman who was shot is related to the murder suspect in that earlier case.

Mustafa has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, along with numerous other charges.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Wilson Police Department with the investigation.

A large section of downtown Wilson surrounding the courthouse remained closed as investigators processed the scene. Authorities said there is no active threat to the public.
