US recalls millions of eggs after salmonella risk identified

The US has recorded several major egg-related Salmonella outbreaks in recent years.

In 2025, eggs from Country Eggs LLC were linked to an outbreak that sickened 105 people in 14 states and led to 19 hospitalisations.

Earlier that year, eggs supplied by August Egg Company were linked to another outbreak that infected 134 people across 10 states, with 38 hospitalisations reported.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that Salmonella causes about 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalisations and 420 deaths in the United States each year.

Salmonella contamination can be difficult to detect because contaminated eggs may look, smell and taste normal, prompting Americans to pay close attention to the risk.

US health officials say reported cases likely represent only a fraction of actual infections, as many people recover without seeking medical care or undergoing testing.

The reason Americans pay close attention to Salmonella outbreaks is not only the number of recalls, but the difficulty of detecting contamination before people eat the product.
