US Congressman Pushes Motion for Immediate Release of Nnamdi Kanu

A United States lawmaker has moved a fresh motion on the floor of Congress demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).  

Congressman John James (R-Michigan) made the call on Thursday while addressing his colleagues, describing Nigeria as “the deadliest place on earth to be a Christian.”

He linked Kanu’s continued detention to broader allegations of religious persecution and violence against Christians in the country.

 James urged the Nigerian government to conduct a fresh trial for Kanu in full compliance with Nigeria’s constitution, based on credible evidence, while ensuring access to legal counsel, proper medical care, and humane detention conditions consistent with international law.

The lawmaker alleged that Kanu was convicted in a “false show trial” on terrorism charges for speaking out against violence in Nigeria.

He claimed the IPOB leader is currently serving a life sentence following what he described as unjust proceedings.

 James further accused the Nigerian government of ignoring or enabling attacks by Islamist groups such as Boko Haram, which he said have led to the slaughter of many Christians since 2019.

“I implore my colleagues to support my bill for the Nigerian government to release Nnamdi Kanu immediately and unconditionally,” he stated.

“America gives billions of dollars to Nigeria. We will not continue to fund Christian genocide.” He emphasized America’s “moral obligation” to ensure Christians in Nigeria can worship freely and in peace.

 The motion comes amid ongoing international attention on Kanu’s case, which has drawn advocacy from various quarters both within and outside Nigeria.

A video of James’ speech on the House floor has been circulating online. This latest development adds to previous congressional resolutions and hearings concerning Kanu’s detention and the wider security and human rights situation in Nigeria.
