Trump Vows New Tariffs on EU Over $1 Billion Google Fine

President Trump is threatening new tariffs on the European Union after the bloc fined Google $1 billion for violating its Digital Markets Act, calling the penalty part of a pattern of ‘unfair treatment’ toward American tech companies.

President Trump is threatening fresh tariffs on the European Union after the bloc fined Google $1 billion, or about 890 million euros. Trump made the threat in a social media post Friday, framing the fine as part of a pattern of unfair treatment toward American companies.

In his post, Trump said his administration would open a trade investigation into what he called the practice of robbing American companies, and by extension, American taxpayers. He went further, saying he expects the penalties against Google to be completely reversed and that a substantial tariff would be placed on the EU as soon as possible.

This isn’t new territory for Trump. He has repeatedly threatened tariffs against major U.S. trading partners throughout his time in office, following through on some of those threats while backing off others.

That baseline exists alongside a separate agreement the U.S. and EU reached last year, which capped American tariffs on most goods coming from the bloc at 15 percent.
