The Faith and Cultural Champions (FCC) project Tuesday raised the alarm over 36.3 percent child delivery that takes place under skilled attendants in Kano based on the 2024 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) statistics. The statistics, FCC stated, is attributable to harmful social norms and behaviours that prevent mostly adolescent girls and young women from accessing quality maternal healthcare, child birth and child spacing services in the state. Some behavioural patterns were identified as unhealthy and unacceptable during a panel of discussion, made up of Muslim and Christian religious scholars as well as culture promoters, at a media round table with the project officials and media professionals, Monday. Men were called upon by the panelists to support their spouses during post natal clinicals, birth as well as post delivery periods. The deputy project director in Kano, Usman Usman, expressed concern on the need to educate and enlighten the public on why men should utilise their cultural and religious practices properly. The FCC harped on the critical maternal mortality ratio in the North-west of 1,025 deaths for every 100,000 births which is twice the national average of 512 deaths for 100,000 births. Partners of the project, including religious and traditional leaders have been called upon to mobilise husbands, household heads, and community members to actively support married AGYWs, support use of health facilities, skilled birth attendance, ANC, birth planning, emergency care and birth spacing services. The project also partners with media professionals to help transform communities against negative norms and behaviours that are detrimental to good health and well being of AGYW.
