The House of Representatives has received the freshly proposed state police establishment bill from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The House which had earlier in June, passed its own version, and progressed to set up a harmonisatiion committee to meet the Senate’s counterpart however, rescinded the action on Tuesday.
The President in a letter to Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, conveying the bill described the proposal as a critical step towards reorganising Nigeria’s security architecture.
The president said “the proposed legislation is a critical component of our administration’s strategy to reorganise Nigeria’s security architecture to better protect our citizens.”
He added that the bill also incorporates additional safeguards to ensure that the creation of a dual policing structure is implemented “quickly and effectively”.
Earlier in a motion to rescind the action of the passed bill, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Francis Waive prayed the House to “rescind its resolution of 11 June, 2026, on the Establishment of State Police Services.”
He also called for the dissolution of the 12-member Conference Committee constituted on 9th July, 2026, and both prayers were adopted through voice votes.
